Pawnee War shield Pawnee War Shield
The star has always been a very powerful medicine for the Pawnee Indians. Sun and stars are principal motifs on many shields. The powerful rays of the sun are portrayed by both zigzag and straight lines. Painted circles and the circle of the shield itself can represent the sun, moon or earth. Other elements of nature such as rain, hail, lightning and thunder were also often mixed into the design.
Buckskin shield on wood frame painted with natural pigments, and decorated with raven feathers, horsehair locks and trade cloth.
