A Brief History of the De Havilland Beaver
Floatplane
The Beaver emerged from post-WWII consultations with
bush pilots who needed a rugged, yet powerful aircraft for
Canada's remote wilderness. The De Havilland Beaver maiden
flight took place on August 16, 1947.
In 1987, Canada recognized the Beaver as one of the top ten
Canadian engineering achievements of the 20th century. Hundreds
remain in service today, particularly as floatplanes in British
Columbia and the Pacific Northwest. Viking Air (now De Havilland
Canada) continues producing parts and modernized variants,
ensuring this iconic floatplane flies on into the 21st
century.
