Levi Morgan's Rifle by Andrew Knez Jr.
 |
Near Buffalo Creek in Monongalia County in 1787 Levi Morgan was skinning a wolf taken from his trap, when three warriors attacked him. He seized his gun and sprang behind a large rock. Instead of running to the farther end of the rock to escape, he turned and fired and one of his attackers fell.
As he tried to reload he discovered that the stopper had fallen from his powder horn and his powder was wasted. He then fled with one of his opponents after him. He found that his pursuer was steadily gaining on him so he dropped his rifle hoping that it would distract him. His pursuer did not falter for an instant. As he reached the summit of a low rise, Morgan halted; and as if someone was approaching from the other side, called aloud, "come on, come on; here is one, make haste."
The Indian turned and retreated then redoubled his exertion when he
heard Morgan exclaim "shoot quick, or he will be out of reach." Morgan returned
home safely. Years later, at the treaty of AuGlaize, Morgan met with the
Indian who had chased him, and who still had his rifle. After reminiscing
for a while they agreed to test each other's speed in a friendly race. Morgan
won the race and at its' conclusion said "Well, you got the gun by outrunning
me then, and I should have it now for outrunning you;" and accordingly reclaimed
his rifle.
